5 Best Underrated Apps to Use on iOS

What's your favorite underrated app? : r/iphone

There are hundreds of thousands of apps you can download on the iOS App Store. However, not all the apps are great for use. I’ve compiled a list of some of the apps I use regularly that others rarely use.

The best part is that these apps are entirely free to use. So, without further ado, here’s a list of the five best underrated apps on iOS.

Apple Measure

KDE Connect

Find: A Modern Photo Manager

Be My Eyes

Arc Search

Apple Measure

The Measure app isn’t talked about enough. The app allows users to check the dimensions of objects. If your phone has the LiDAR sensor (the black spot at the back of Pro iPhones after iPhone 12 Pro); you can use it to get accurate measurements of most objects in your house.

Using the app, you can draw lines from one point to another. As long as the lines are drawn across the same plane and have nothing interfering between them, you’re going to get accurate measurements.

The app also has a built-in camera, which allows you to take pictures of the measurements as a reference. Not only that, the Measure app also has a Level tab that allows you to check the level of a plane which can be extremely useful if you’re a handyman.

KDE Connect

As someone who isn’t fully into the Apple ecosystem, it feels rather hard to use an iPhone with a Windows PC.

However, the KDE Connect app comes in handy, especially if you’re a Windows or a Linux user. The main highlight of the app is how easy it is to share files from one device to the other. Even large video files can be transferred with no hassle.

Not only that, the app allows you to control the mouse cursor of your PC, essentially using the touchscreen as a touchpad.

The phone just shows up as long as you’re connected to the same network, and you can even see the battery level of your device, directly from the app. KDE Connect is miles ahead of the Link to Windows app offered by Microsoft since it has more features and is much more reliable.

Find: A Modern Photo Manager

In an era where people value their privacy more than ever, the photos and videos in your gallery are some of the most personal things you own on your smartphone. While the default Photos app is great for general use, it just doesn’t have enough features to help you search for exactly what you want.

The Find app can be great for you to organize the thousands of pictures you have on your phone. One great thing about this app is that it runs entirely offline, meaning none of your data is sent out to a server.

The app allows you to create smart albums with your pictures, and it uses machine learning to help group pictures together. You can search your images using the date, text, metadata, and even the names of objects in the image.

Find is entirely free to use and has no subscriptions or ads.

Be My Eyes

While we hope that you never have to use this app, it’s something extremely useful for people with visual impairments.

The app is essentially a free service for people who have trouble seeing. There are two types of users of this app, the first are the vision impaired people and the others are volunteers who opt to help them. The app connects both types of people through a video call and the volunteer can see what the visually impaired person is asking help for.

If you’re a volunteer, make sure you have a stable internet connection to avoid losing the video call mid-session. You can even help people when you are out and about. However, you must have access to 5G or be connected to a WiFi hotspot. Thanks to providers like Xfinity, their countrywide hotspots keep you connected everywhere. On top of that, you can reach out to its customer service by dialing the Xfinity phone number and get your internet issues resolved.

Arc Search

This might just be the phone browser replacement you need. It’s a completely free app, and it reimagines the concepts of browsers being used today. Tab switching is similar to the default app switcher in iOS, and it allows you to sync your progress with Arc on PC.

You can add your favorite tabs into their folders and even create separate spaces for doing different work. But what sets Arc Search apart from its competitors is its ‘Browse for Me’ feature that creates a new AI-powered webpage with relevant information. It also links to the sources directly so you can just click on the links to browse.

They recently added a ‘Pinch to Summarize’ feature that allows you to pinch while on any webpage, and it will create a summary of the page, which is much easier to go through, compared to the entire page.
